More Red Sky festival bands announced

This afternoon, Red Sky Music Festival announced four more festival grounds bands: The Fab Four - The Ultimate Beatles Tribute, Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers, Buddy Guy and 10,000 Maniacs.

No idea who the first two are, to be honest.

Update: The Fab Four - The Ultimate Beatles Tribute is an Elvis Presley a popular Beatles tribute band. (No joke.) And now that I looked up Bruce Hornsby, I guess I knew who he was without knowing who he was, so to speak. Hornsby did "The Way It Is," which is probably more famous nowadays for being the sample used in Tupac's "Changes." (Thanks to my OWH pal Jon for pointing that out for me.)

Buddy Guy will be a good addition. He opened for B.B. King in Council Bluffs recently and was amazing.

The one I'm honestly surprised by is 10,000 Maniacs. Good band, but who knew they still existed? As it turns out, the current lineup includes original members, but not Natalie Merchant. Interesting.

Anyway, if you hadn't noticed, Red Sky basically has two components. One consists of six big outdoor concerts. The other is a six-day daytime music festival. Personally, I think that's going to benefit Red Sky ticket sales since they won't be counting on thousands of people buying full festival passes.

More news coming later this week.

  1. Is there any indication by anyone releasing any of this information that they may be coordinating some of these acts in a sensible fashion? For example, I certainly would like to see Buddy Guy, and George Clinton would also be a great show to see, but if they are on different days with a random selection which the rest of the bands announced seem to represent, then I might not actually go to see either of them.
Are you sure the announced price range of the Journey tickets is actually correct? Because it seems quite unlikely to me that there are more than a handful of folks on the planet who would spend $120 to see Journey/Night Ranger.

  2. Actually they announced that the "The Fab Four - The Ultimate Tribute" will be there... which is a Beatles tribute band. Not sure that's "better" but it's what they actually posted.

  3. Justin - You are correct. They actually got the name wrong, hence my confusion. It's "The Fab Four - The Ultimate Beatles Tribute." They also kept calling Sublime With Rome simply "Sublime," which ain't exactly the same thing.

  4. Fred - Not sure how they're doing that. I don't think they'd do "themed" days, but you never know. It probably has more to do with the band's routing (which the festival can't control) than anything.

  5. Natalie quit 10,000 Maniacs 18 years ago. We continued on with John Lombardo rejoining and having Mary Ramsey sing lead vocals. Mary had previously toured with us playing viola and singing back-up vocals. With John and Mary we released "Love Among The Ruins" on Geffen records in 1997 and "The Earth Pressed Flat" on Bar None in 1999. Sadly, our dear friend and guitarist Robert Buck died in 2000. It took us a long time to get over that. Currently, we are writing and recording new songs at our studio in Jamestown, NY and playing a few gigs every summer because we still enjoy each other and playing our music. Go to www.maniacs.com and follow links to facebook for updates and youtube (10KMTV) for recent video footage.
    Give us a chance.

  6. Hi Steven! Thank you so much for the update. I think a lot of people are more familiar with the band from when Natalie was a member, but I've heard from people that are excited to see 10,000 Maniacs again. I've heard good things about Mary.

Any idea on when you'll have some new songs?

  7. Kevin, I've just started following your blog, and I've enjoyed it and learned a few things. You seem to very knowledgeable about the current music scene, espceially locally. I guess that is good b/c that is your job. But, are you really telling me that you are a music reporter and you had to look up Bruce Hornsby?

  8. You've never heard of Bruce Hornsby? Did I misread?? Yeah, the guy hasn't had a hit in 20 years, but he ain't exactly a newcomer...and honestly...anyone who calls himself a music critic should be familiar with the name at least.

  9. Mr. Whiplash - As I mentioned before, I know who Hornsby is and I know his music, but it took a minute for his music and name to connect with each other inside my very cluttered brain.
